Quick-take: Mildly Humorous.

Dan's Review

I'm not really a fan of the "random for the sake of random" style of humor, which the book seems to like using. Also, the other style used often is side-commentary about how absurd the situation is. I'm not sure if there is a term for it. I know the "Family Guy" TV show uses it a lot. A character says a catchphrase, and the other characters call them out on it saying it is bad, or perhaps there is a mini discussion of something completely off-topic. The book uses this one a lot, and I'd say it can be just a mild chuckle. Also, f-bombs and crotch kicks only go so far with me.

A technique that I mentioned in many of my reviews is the tired, exhausting, and boring plotline of taking the superpowers away from a character. It's lazy writing. It is basically acknowledging the character is way overpowered to make a good story. So what does the author do? Just have the character not use the power except in critical moments when it helps the story.

It is possible to write a good story with a vastly overpowered character. Brandon Sanderson made one for Mistborn, and seeing the hero mop the floor with the baddie was greatly satisfying.

Last complaint. The group of misfit heroes are completely incompetent to the point of absurdity. They have no knowledge or skill of anything crime-fighting. Every success is pure dumb luck. I need at least a thread of plausibility.

The most enjoyable character was probably Anna. "Wine humor" / "haha, I'm an alcoholic!" is not really my thing either, but it actually did fit her. Her side commentary and quips were grounded in character.

Score: 3/5. If you like Space Team (and I did), you may like this one. Just go in knowing Space Team is a far better book.
