Quick-take: The Ultimate Underdog Lawyer Fantasy.
John Grisham could not have designed a more lobsided underdog story. Rudy is the freshest of rookie lawyers. His case begins just days after he passes his exams. His opponent is the slickest, most expensive laywer in town. Rudy is broke. The defendent is a sleazy insurance company. There is not a single redeeming quality in the defendent, and Rudy has all the odds stacked against me.
The aburdity of this David vs Goliath disparity started to become comical for me as it started to unfold. However, it does make the courtoom drama statisfying. Despite my complaints, this was the best part of the story. It's good this part is so entertaining because I thought the side stories were either weak or annoying.
The part I liked the least was the love interest. At best, it is inappropriate. At worst, it is cringe. Just slice that entire plot out. She served no purpose other than being something pretty for Rudy to fawn over and as a distraction from the main case.
The secondary case had some amusing tidbits. There is some good comedy that could be mined from it. That story could have been expanded some if the main plot needs some distractions.
I did not care for the ending that. As a mystery/thriller, I will not write why. I will just leave it there.
I know I complained a good bit, but I did enjoy this book. Score is 5/5. I was craving more of that crazy courtroom drama.
